A safe is the single most dangerous item in most houses to move. It is enormously heavy, the weight is concentrated in a very small footprint, and it does not forgive a mistake. People are hurt moving safes more often than any other household item, and the damage a slipping safe does to stairs, doorframes and floors is expensive.

This is not a job for extra help and a rented dolly. It is a job for equipment and technique.

Why Safes Are Different

Concentrated weight

A gun safe can run from 300 to well over 1,000 pounds sitting on a base barely bigger than a doormat. That is why they punch through stair treads and dent hardwood.

Top-heavy when empty

Emptied of contents, many safes are heavier at the top and door side. They tip more easily empty than people expect.

The door is the hazard

An unsecured door swinging open mid-carry shifts the balance instantly. Doors get locked and strapped before anything moves.

Stairs multiply everything

A basement gun safe coming up a turned staircase is the hardest common household move there is.

Before We Arrive

  • Empty it completely. Firearms, ammunition, documents, valuables. Lighter is safer and ammunition is heavy.
  • Secure and lock the door. Have the combination or key available so it can be confirmed locked.
  • Clear the path. Both ends, plus the landing and any turn.
  • Tell us the weight and the stairs. The make and model is usually enough for us to look up the weight. The staircase decides the crew size.
  • Think about the destination floor. If it is going upstairs or onto a finished floor, say so, so we bring protection.

Firearms and ammunition are your responsibility, not ours. We do not transport firearms or ammunition. Move those separately and legally yourself, and hand us an empty safe.

Floors, Stairs And Protection

Safes are usually moved on heavy-duty equipment with the load spread rather than point-loaded, and we protect the route rather than hoping for the best. Hardwood, tile and finished basement stairs all get covered. Morris County has a lot of older homes where the basement stairs were never built for this, and that is worth a conversation before the day.

Can you move a safe up or down basement stairs?

Usually yes, but the staircase decides the crew and the equipment. Turned stairs, open risers and exterior bulkhead steps all change the approach, so describe them when you call.

Do I have to empty the safe first?

Yes. Empty it completely, including ammunition, and lock the door. We do not transport firearms or ammunition.

Will you bolt it down at the new house?

Tell us in advance if it needs anchoring at the destination and what the floor is, and we will discuss what is possible.

How much does it cost to move a gun safe?

Safe Types And What They Actually Weigh

Weight is the first question we ask, because it decides the crew, the equipment and whether the staircase is even a candidate. Most owners underestimate it, usually because the delivery was handled by someone else years ago.

Compact and pistol safes

Light enough for a small crew, but often bolted down and awkwardly placed inside a closet with no room to work.

Standard gun safes

The common household case. Heavy enough that stairs become the deciding factor rather than the weight itself.

Fire-rated safes

Fire lining adds substantial weight for the same external size. A fire-rated safe is frequently far heavier than a non-rated one that looks identical.

Commercial and gun-room safes

The heaviest end. These sometimes cannot leave by the route they came in, because the house has changed since.

If you know the make and model, tell us. Manufacturers publish shipping weights, and that single detail turns an estimate from a guess into a plan.

Why This Is The Job People Get Hurt On

Safes cause more injuries than any other household item we move, and the mechanism is nearly always the same. The load is heavier than expected, it starts to go, and somebody instinctively tries to stop it. You cannot stop several hundred pounds with your hands, and the attempt is what causes the injury.

  • Momentum on stairs. A safe that begins moving downhill does not slow down. Control comes from equipment and positioning, not from grip strength.
  • Tipping point is closer than it looks. Narrow footprints tip at a shallower angle than people assume, particularly once the door side is loaded.
  • Rolling on casters. Some safes ship on small casters intended for positioning only. They are not transport wheels and they fail on thresholds.
  • Improvised help. Extra bodies without equipment make a safe move more dangerous, not less, because coordination gets harder.

Protecting The Route

The damage a safe does is concentrated because the weight is concentrated. A safe that would sit happily on a concrete floor will dent hardwood, crack tile and split a stair tread, so the route gets protected before anything moves.

  • Hard floors covered along the full carry path, not just where the safe lands.
  • Stair treads protected, and the load spread rather than resting on one point.
  • Doorframes and corners padded, because a safe passing a frame has no margin.
  • Thresholds bridged so the equipment does not drop and jar the load.

Basements, Bulkheads And Turns

Morris County has a lot of houses where the safe lives in a finished basement, and the way out is either an interior staircase with a turn or an exterior bulkhead. Both are workable. Both need to be described accurately before the day.

What matters is the geometry rather than the number of steps: whether there is a landing, whether the turn is a quarter or a half, whether the handrail can come off, and what the headroom is at the top. Photographs answer all of that faster than a description.

If the safe was placed before the basement was finished, say so. It happens more often than you would think, and it occasionally means the original route no longer exists. Better to establish that in advance than with the safe half way up the stairs.

Anchoring At The New House

Most safes are anchored where they end up, and that decision belongs to the destination rather than the move. Tell us the floor type at the new address, whether it is concrete slab, a wooden subfloor, or tile over either, and whether there is anything below that must not be drilled into. If anchoring is part of what you need, raise it at estimate time so it is planned rather than improvised.

How many people does it take to move a gun safe?

It depends on weight and stairs far more than on size. A ground-floor safe with a clear path is a different job from the same safe in a basement, and the crew is set accordingly.

Can you get a safe out through a bulkhead?

Often yes. The geometry at the top of the steps and the headroom matter more than the step count, so send photographs of the approach.

What if the safe will not fit back through the door?

It happens, usually because the house changed after the safe arrived. We would far rather identify that during the estimate than on moving day, which is why we ask about the original route.

Do you drill into the floor to anchor it?

If anchoring is needed, tell us the destination floor construction in advance. Some floors and some situations are straightforward and some are not, and it is a conversation worth having beforehand.

Will you move it within the same house?

Yes. Moving a safe from a basement to a garage or between floors is common and it is the same job with a shorter drive.
